How to Know That Bread Has Gone Bad?

Watching a movie around midnight and need something to munch on? Crackers and salsa sound nice, but you finished them last week. The staple bread comes to the rescue. How simple and satisfying! Also, it is hard to imagine breakfast without bread.

For the sad part, breads have an expiration date. But the good news is that you don’t have to go by that date and you can recognize its freshness yourselves. Go ahead and have it unless it issues bad smell, taste or texture.

Have a look-see

Bread saves us from sleepless nights even after it has expired. The date doesn’t matter as long as it looks fine. Although always remember this – don’t eat it if there’s mold on the bread. The fungus on food items grows in different color, size and shapes. Don’t confuse the mold infected bread with fruit bread. It will anyway smell and taste different.

More often than not, bread will go bad after the expiry date. There is a specific type of mold that affects bread – black bread mold. Let’s not get into specifications, but all you need to know is that you have to stay away from it. It may cause infections. If you find any splotches or marks on the bread, make sure you don’t eat it.

The way it feels

If it isn’t good, it won’t feel good – that is to say that the bread will lose its original texture if it has gone stale. The types of breads available make it difficult to make out which one is fine and which one will give you a bad stomach, but you’re unlikely to miss that if it’s your favorite bread. Sourdough bread and bread without yeast will gain varying textures if they’ve gone bad. It if feels more chewy or harder than usual, you can always make a French toast or omelet with it.

Smell it up

One of the best ways to make out whether it’s eatable is to smell it. If it has a foul smell or tastes bad, then all the more reason to show it the bin. These two characteristics will most likely give you a bad stomach, so don’t think of having it.

You can extend the life of the bread by freezing it. Keep the bread in a cool and dry place if you don’t have access to a refrigerator. Additionally, make sure that bacteria don’t use it for midnight snacks like you do, as in – keep it tightly wrapped or in a sealed container.

Eating anything stale or expired may lead to undesired medical conditions. So always make sure the bread is fresh and doesn’t smell or taste bad. You can now choose from a variety of breads that will add to the munching quotient!
